Scrub your way to beautiful skin

Exfoliation smooths skin and delivers much-needed moisture

With a new season upon us, it's time to take care of dull, parched skin that's flaky after too many long summer days.
To freshen up a complexion, there are scrubs, created to polish and deliver moisture to dry skin.
Scrubs are nothing new. For centuries, those in search of smoother skin have turned to exfoliation. Some sources claim that Cleopatra commanded couriers to gather Dead Sea salts to add to her beauty regimen.

But it seems that the business of polishing skin has boomed in recent years, with the addition of hydroxy acids to even out hyper-pigmentation, or age spots, and wrinkles. For an even deeper treatment, doctors offer microdermabrasion, in which fine particles are sprayed across the skin, removing the top layer of cells.

But using a scrub product at home is as easy as a visit to the drugstore for exfoliants made of pumice, sugars, salts and more.

We found a variety of products that make at-home exfoliation a cinch, whether it's gently buffing chapped lips or smoothing calloused heels.

Good Scents Bath & Body Shop, in Victorian Square Shoppes, offers a scrub with a unique mix of Dead Sea salts, coconut extract and oils, and emu oil made from the fat of the bird and thought by some to relieve joint pain.

The salts are ultra-fine, said Bryan Flynn, who co-owns the business with Ron Williams, and the oil "doesn't leave your hands as slick, so you can open jars."

Some clients, he said, choose to add a lime scent to create a coconut-and-citrus blend — islandy with a zing. They can choose, at no extra cost, from the store's 250 scents and 40 essential oils, and add them to everything from lotions to bath bombs and candles. "We tailor it to you," Flynn said. "We even do unscented if you're sensitive to smells."
